Developing Presence, Precision and Agility in Emotionally Focused Therapy

EFT Supervision & Consultation with Cornelius Sheehan, LCSW

Emotionally Focused Therapy demands more than understanding attachment theory—it requires real-time tracking, emotional attunement, and execution under pressure. Supervision offers a dedicated space for guided practice, real-time case reflection, and structured feedback—translating conceptual clarity into natural, responsive clinical action so you can guide clients with confidence.

My Approach to EFT Supervision

Most therapists seek supervision when they are feeling stuck with a complex case. While resolving immediate clinical impasses is an important part of our work, the broader goal is to help you build internal capacities that continue serving you long after our session ends. Our work together focuses on developing four essential pillars of clinical practice:

1. Attachment Tracking & Conceptual Precision

We map the emotional and attachment dynamics organizing each partner’s internal experience and external interactions. Grounded in my ACES and CARES teaching models, we organize complex clinical data so you can maintain clarity in the attachment frame, especially under pressure.

2. Intervention Refinement & Pacing

We move beyond theoretical knowledge into deliberate skill execution. We focus on sharpening your timing, tone, and delivery across key EFT interventions: tracking process, deepening primary emotion, shaping enactments, processing attachment injuries, and keeping the focus firmly on the negative interactional cycle.

3. Therapeutic Presence & Grounding

EFT requires us to step into high-stress, emotionally charged moments without losing our balance. We cultivate the internal grounding needed to quiet internal noise, regulate your own central nervous system, and remain emotionally engaged and intentional when a session feels uncertain or intense.

4. Self-Supervision & Reflective Practice

The ultimate measure of effective supervision is your growing ability to track and guide your own work. You will learn to recognize when you have drifted from the model, understand the internal or interactional triggers that led to the drift, and make graceful, real-time course corrections while still in the room.

My Path with Emotionally Focused Therapy

Like many clinicians, my first introduction to Emotionally Focused Therapy completely shifted how I view relational distress and human connection. But moving from the conceptual power of attachment theory to feeling genuinely grounded in the room wasn’t an overnight leap—it took focused, deliberate practice.

Mastering EFT isn’t about rigidly following a script—it’s about cultivating deep emotional presence.

Working toward my credentialing as an ICEEFT Certified Therapist and Supervisor taught me to trust the process and to sharpen micro-interventions through structured video review and supportive supervision.

Having walked this exact road myself, I bring both clinical rigor and personal empathy to our sessions. Whether you are taking your first steps after an Externship or preparing your final tape submissions, my goal is to help you build confidence, precision, and agility without losing your unique voice as a therapist.

Supervision Tailored to Your Clinical Practice

Supervision is grounded in attachment science and designed to meet you at your current stage of development—whether you are integrating your first Externship or preparing final tape submissions for certification.

Individual Supervision Focus

In our 1-on-1 sessions, we have the space and time to go deep into your actual clinical work.

Session Video Review

We analyze recorded session clips (5–15 minute segments) to track the EFT Tango in real time, observe non-verbal affective shifts, and fine-tune your intervention timing.

Self-of-the-Therapist Work

We attend directly to what gets stirred up in your own nervous system, helping you quiet internal noise, unblock stuck points, and stay grounded during intense sessions.

Customized Pace

Our work is tailored specifically to your learning edge, current caseload, and personal style as a clinician.

Taking the Next Step in Supervision

Supervision is a collaborative, ongoing process built on trust and clinical safety. Whether you are seeking focused consultation on a complex case, looking to refine your core EFT interventions, or actively working toward ICEEFT certification, the first step is ensuring our working styles align.
